A Feast For Your Eyes & Palate

I love food.  I really do.  Like I'm not one of those girls that become shy around food and will only nibble on crackers - no ma'am.  As much as I like eating food, I also like cooking it, and admiring it.  I watch a LOT of Foodnetwork.  To bring it back a bit, even pre-foodnetwork I used to watch Jacques Pepin and Julia Childs on the PBS network when I was a kid.  Yep, that's how long I've been a foodie.

Anyway, I recently discovered a new food blog, Spoon Fork Bacon - and the foods look super delicious and the photos make them that much more delicious.

Along with the delicious photos you can find the recipes on Spoon Fork Bacon

Happy salivating. ;-)

Kohl's + Jennifer Lopez Collection

This weekend I was shopping around for some home goods and made my way into Kohls. It's becoming my new favorite place to purchase housewares and home accessories (picked up some new bath rugs & placemats) + they seem to always have ridiculously amazing sales.

Anyway, here's an interesting fact that I just learned about Kohls - they are collaborating with Ms. Jennifer Lozpez for a fashion line. Who knew.  They recently shared the fall lookbook, here are a few of the pieces from the collection:

Yep, this collection certainly has J. Lo's name written all over it. LOL
To see more from the collection, check out The Budget Babe.

What do you think of the collection?
or Kohls?

She's Addicted 2 Etsy

Hope everyone had a great weekend.  I'm starting this week off right with an awesome Q&A session with pretty lady, Cynthia from Addicted2Etsy.

A little bit about your self?
I'm originally from Cameroon, West Africa, but New York City has been my home for over 14years. I'm an attorney by day and in the past year have enjoyed becoming a part of  the blogging community.

How would you describe your style?
My style is easy going and laid back. I enjoy fashion and all but I would never sacrifice comfort or my budget for it. After all, you can't buy style.

Where do you look to for inspiration when it comes to your style?

These days I'm most inspired by fashion bloggers like glamourai, songofstyle and wheredidugetthat. But mostly, just walking around the city, real streetstyle is the best inspiration.

5 wardrobe essentials for women:
I'm all about underwear, so my first 2 would be, no pantylines undies, a good convertible/strapless bra,  the other 3 would be, one pair of go with everything pumps, a well fitting pair of jeans and of course, a little hot dress (note- didn't say LBD- don't think it has to be black, but it has to be LITTLE)).

Advice for looking stylish on a budget:
I think the problem for most women is buying stuff just because its's on sale or buying items they like but don't love. If you have a limited budget, always ask yourself how much you need/want that item. Make sure it adds something new and different to your wardrobe. There's no need to be obsessed with designer labels, theres so much fun and great stuff in high street stores and use Etsy, Ebay , vintage shops etc.

What beauty items are in your makeup bag at all times?
Black Opal Concealer, Black Opal Invisible Oil Blocking Powder, a Kabuki brush, Eyebrow brush and Burt's Bees lip balm. (Yeah Black opal really matches my complexion and has been good on my skin, so I'm pretty loyal)

What does beauty mean to you?
Confidence - once you find it.

Tips to Find Balance in Your Life this Fall

Fall is just around the corner which means so many things to so many people, if you have kids school is about to start, if you're a college student or grad student the semester is about to begin, and if you're like me there's so much going on that you're in need of finding balance.

Today, I have a guest post from a super amazing Green Living and Holistic Lifestyle expert, and owner of Green Bliss EcoSpa in LA, Randi Ragan with some tips on how to get your mind, body, and life in tune with the change of season.

If you are interested in aligning yourself more with the turning of the seasons, there are some beautiful things to embrace in that pursuit.

Prioritizing how to re-balance yourself in terms of workloads, “me time”, and family time, is paramount as you head into the holiday obligations just ahead, and all the attendant stress they bring. The cooling off of the weather means our bodies cool off internally; we can smell the turning of the leaves, the air gets crisp. We find ourselves snuggling into blankets and gathering around fireplaces, and so our gaze to a quieter, more restrained sensibility. Perhaps the words of the season are “grounding and assessing”.

Vetiver essential oil is my aromatherapy pick for the season. It is extracted from the root of the grassy vetiver plant and is a very earthy, woody, spicy scent. Its emotional balancing and grounding effect helps ease nervous tension and excessive energy. Blended with a little chamomile and bergamot, it provides excellent relief for irritability and stress.

Most people’s skin takes a beating in the summer sun, with overexposure and drying out being two of the most common issues. I would use the Autumn as a time to repair and rejuvenate. Add lots of Vitamin A to your skin care routine in the form of carrot seed serums and carrot oils. Vitamin A on your skin is a great nighttime regimen because it works as your skin rests and helps to restore collagen.

Carrot Rejuvenating Mask:

Puree 1 peeled carrot, steamed to a soft consistency.

Mash the carrot and mix with 1 Tbs. of high quality olive oil and 1 tsp of honey. Cut open a vitamin E capsule and add the liquid vitamin E to the mixture (Vitamin E oil is also a great anti-oxidant for skin regeneration).

Stir until the consistency stands up to spreading on your skin. Add more or less of the olive oil to thicken or to thin out.

Apply the mask to a clean face, let it set for 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water and pat dry.

Tree Pose in Yoga is the perfect representation of the focus on balance. It is a standing balance pose requiring concentration and attention to breath, as well as core awareness, to perform successfully. Simply stand barefoot on the floor and place one foot up on the inner thigh of the opposite leg. Press into the thigh with the bottom of the foot to hold it in place. When stable, hold your hands in prayer position in the center of your chest. Focus your gaze on a spot in front of you. Become aware of your breath and all the sensations your body is experiencing as you hold the pose for as long as you can – working up to 5 full breaths (if possible) before switching to the other side.

Tree pose reminds us that we all fall in life, the goal is to fall with grace and equanimity and then get back up and try again. In the Fall (autumn) we literally have the trees losing their leaves, in transition to the next season. It’s a beautiful visual reminder that nothing stays the same – even our attempts to find perfect balance will undergo transformation. The best we can do is breathe deeply and stay as “in the moment” as possible.

Washing your face with oil. To do or not to do - that is the ?

For those lades that suffer from dry skin like my self you may find this beneficial.

Article written by Dr. Leslie Baumann of Skin Type Solutions

Your “Dry” skin is defined by a lack of oil, which is why your skin often feels tight or rough to the touch—especially after cleansing. Sure you’re using moisturizer to supplement your skin with the essential oils it needs, but you can get a leg up on hydrating your skin by starting your skincare regimen with an oil-based cleanser.

The main benefit of oil cleansing is that the cleanser itself deposits lipids on the skin—which is a big help for “Dry” types. These lipids, or fatty acids, help skin hold onto water. As an added bonus, some oils—especially safflower oil—are rich in linoleic acid that the skin needs to make ceramides, which naturally help prevent dehydration. Other oils that are rich omega-3 fatty acids (such as flax seed) have anti-inflammatory properties, and olive oil in particular has antioxidant benefits as well.

Oil-based cleansers work differently than foaming cleansers. Oils actually surround dirt and product residue before water washes them away, leaving necessary fats intact. (Foaming cleansers, on the other hand, contain detergent-like surfactants that dissolve oil and dirt and pull lipids from the skin cells.) Cleansing oils are much better for dry skin than foaming cleansers because they protect the lipids that dry skin needs to remain hydrated. In addition, oils are able to remove stubborn makeup and sunscreen, so you also get the benefits of a makeup remover in the same bottle. And unlike other cleansers, it’s best to apply cleansing oil with a cotton ball, and then rinse three times with warm water to remove all of the residue. And best of all, you can skip the moisturizer after cleansing with oil (unless you are super dry)—just don’t forget the sunscreen!

If you’re considering making the switch to an oil cleanser, check out the ones from Shu Uemura. They offer six formulas to suit a variety of skin needs, and if you’re lucky you may be able to scoop up one of their limited-edition bottles!

+++++++++++
I've oil cleansed with success before.  My oils of choice were castor oil and grapeseed oil.  I'll have to try safflower oil as the doc recommends when I revisit OCM again.  Currently, I'm using this soap bar to wash my face which is packed with extra virgin camelina oil as well as pumpkin seed oil.

Do you use oil to cleanse your face? Why or why not?
What oils do your face justice?

Virgin Coconut Oil for your Hair is a Treat

Doesn't that coconut make you wish you were on an island somewhere?

I've been using coconut (in oil form) for a couple of weeks now in my hair and I like what it's doing to it.
This isn't the first time I've used it but I kind of put it off to the side for a long while.  Mostly, because I was experimenting with other oils (jojoba, rosemary, castor, etc)

But, recently I saw a tweet from a fellow blogger, Krissy about free samples from a company called Tropical Traditions.  So, I checked it out and lo and behold got a jar of their coconut oil in the mail.

The benefits of coconut oil as a hair treatment are pretty endless. Here's an excerpt from an article:

Studies have shown that virgin coconut oil actually penetrates the hair shaft. It does this on both damaged and undamaged hair, both as a pre-wash, and post-wash product. The authors of that study believe this is because "Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft." Studies have also shown that using coconut oil on hair prevented combing damage. ~ source

When I received the product, it was no longer a white solid as pictured.  It was literally an oil.  The heat melted the base to it's natural form, which I'm okay with - it's easier to work with the oil than the solid (in my opinon).

I used the oil as a pre-treatment:
I dampened my hair with water and applied the oil to my scalp and the length of my hair.  I worked in sections just because it's easier for me to manage my head of hair.  After I saturated my entire head with coconut oil, I donned a plastic cap (in this case a plastic bag ;) and went about my business (which means taking care of the home and kids).  I also left it on overnight until the next morning when I washed my hair.  My hair was super soft and super shiny prior to washing and afterwards.

I also used it again after putting in my leave-in conditioner but before my styling product.

So now I understand why so many people rave about coconut oil, honestly in the past when I used it - it wasn't my favorite oil.  But, I think it's because how I was using it simply on dry hair.

Oh - I noticed my hair wasn't as frizzy after using the coconut oil.  Which is a +

There's so many ways to use this oil, so I would say if you're new to it, experiment with it.  Try it as a pre-shampoo treatment, or add some to your conditioner, or use it as deep conditioning treatment, scalp massages, the possibilities are endless.

Make sure you purchase virgin coconut oil.  If you purchase refined chances are the chemical composition of the oil has changed and you won't get the maximum benefits of the oil, which is its high content of fatty acids.

Virgin coconut oil is not cheap (gotta pay more for the good stuff) but is worth it.
If you're interested Tropical Conditions is always running a sale (there's one now), giving away free jars, and coupons. So like them on Facebook if anything to reap some of the benefits.

Disclaimer: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product, and I was under no obligation to review it.  I reviewed it simply because I wanted to share the benefits and my experience.  Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review in return for the free product.
