Women in Business

I'm always inspired by women that are entrepreneurial and take the leap into being a business owner. I came across this Boston Globe article about Trinette Faint, a model and former assistant to Matt Damon, turned business woman that opened an online beauty store because she felt there was a void in the ethnic beauty arena and decided to fill it.

 (source: Boston Globe {Wendy Maeda/Globe Staff})

Here's a snippet of the article.
When she began modeling more than 20 years ago, Trinette Faint resolved to someday open a store with beauty products and other notions for women of all backgrounds, skin tones, and hair types.  Faint knew what it was like to have to improvise because the right foundation or hair product wasn’t available.
“I had this idea that wouldn’t it be great if there was a store where obviously black women — but all women — could get anything they needed, from hair and makeup to nylons and Band-Aids that are the right shade,’’ says Faint, 38, a native of Joliet, Ill., who lives now in Medford. “There are tons of little things that can make your life so much easier, and make you feel like someone really thought of what was missing out there that could benefit you.’’
In December, Faint, whose resume includes three years as Matt Damon’s personal assistant, launched Love Hue (www.lovehue.com), an online boutique that helps fill the niche she identified long ago. The site includes makeup and skin care and hair care brands for women of all shades and hair types. Brands include Zhen Beauty (cosmetics and skin-care products designed for Asian women); Curls (a hair care collection originally developed for biracial and multiracial women); Nvey Eco and other organic lines; and non-organic selections from names like Julie Hewett, whom Faint befriended on the set of “Ocean’s Eleven.’’ Many of the products cost between $10 and $25, and none is more than $42.

Dabur Amla Oil

For the past three weeks I've been using alma oil; it is also known as Indian gooseberry.  This fruit is very important in Indian Ayurvedic practices.  I've been using it specifically for my hair by massaging into my scalp & throughout the length of my hair.  The benefits:

  • coats the hair making it appear shiny
  • conditions and moisturizes the scalp
  • darkens and strengthens the hair
I've been using it as a pre-poo (pre-shampoo) treatment.  I let it sit on my hair overnight with a plastic cap or (if I don't have much time) for an hour.   Then I follow with my normal shampoo, condtioner, etc.

The only drawback to this oil - it has an unpleasant odor.  But, it's a small price for me to pay considering the benefits.

Do any of you use amla oil?

Curls Curling Creme

A few weeks ago I was at my local beauty supply store purchasing my first product giveaway.  While I was there I picked up this little jar of styling creme.

I was looking for a styling product that would provide some hold or definition to my two strand twist and curls that I've recently started doing.  Anywho, I thought to myself, this is only $3.99 so why not.  After using this, I'm pleased to say that it really works like a charm.  There is no white residue or dryness (which is sometimes present when using certain styling aids) instead I have soft, supple but defined hair.

Product description: 8 Ounces. Create soft, shiny and smooth frizz free curls. A unique formula that can be used daily on both natural and relaxed hair. Adds tremendous moisture to each and every curl. Designed with Curl Memory to provide Luscious Locks for "All Girls Wanting Curls".

For ladies looking for a product to define curls, this is an inexpensive option that delivers.

Nurture Your Tresses with Creme of Nature

Being the certified product junkie enthusiast that I am I spend a lot of time and money purchasing hair products;  if not purchasing, I'm usually in a beauty supply store or aisle near you perusing hair products in contemplation of buying. One brand that I am very familiar with is Creme of Nature.   Back in the day, Black hair stylists and kitchen beauticians shampooo and conditioner of choice was Creme of Nature.    Remember the white bottle with the  yellow cap? Yep, I knew you would :)  Well in place of the white bottles there are now bright orange bottles.  Anyway fast forward to about two weeks ago, I won a prize pack from Creme of Nature company as a result of being their 200th follower on Twitter.  Can you believe that? Anyway, needless to say I was very pleased to win their LOVE PACK which consisted of four products.  This weekend I put the rebranded & reformulated products to the test.

photo taken by yours truly :)

The new packaging is certainly eye catching; so you definitely can't or won't miss it on the shelves.

1.  Red Clover & Aloe Soothing Shampoo uses organic Red Clover, one of nature’s healing emollients, plus Aloe to soothe and hydrate dry hair and flaky scalp while gently cleansing and detangling hair.

My experience:  This shampoo has the same distinct scent as the original CON shampoo.  What I liked most about this shampoo was that it lathered very nicely, my hair did not feel stripped, and detangling was a breeze.  The last two factors are very important to me especially since I'm in my 5th month of transitioning.  Overall, I really really like this shampoo as my hair felt very moisturized after washing.

2.  Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-In Creme Conditioner for Dehydrated Hair This creamy formula quickly softens, detangles, and conditions. Organic Lemongrass adds shine while Rosemary helps protect and strengthen.

My experience: This condish is definitely creamy, upon application it was difficult for me to distinguish if the leave-in accomplished its tasks.  However, I noticed the results only after my hair was dried and yes my hair felt super moisturized afterward.   I was very pleased to say the least because my hair tends to be extremely dry throughout this transition. I also applied this to my girlfriends hair as well as we both did two strand twists to each others hair Saturday night and it worked really well on her natural hair.  She actually called me the following day to find out the exact name of the leave in so that she could purchase it for her own hair.

3.  Red Clover Breakage Daily Breakage Relief This can be used before styling and also as a night treatment, and is made with Red Clover and Aloe. Red Cover is one of nature’s emollients helping to reduce breakage, repair split ends and increase hair strength.

My Experience:  This might very well be the leader of the pack - in my opinion.  I really love this product!  I applied this the night after my wash.  I applied it from root to tip and then rolled my hair on satin covered sponge rollers.  After unrolling my hair was shiny, felt conditioned, was nicely moisturized, and had a nice scent.  This is a keeper!

4.  Sweet Mandarin & Lemongrass Nourishing Body Lotion - CON has made the transition to skincare.

My Experience:  I first got a whiff of this lotion on my husband.  Let me explain.  So we make ourselves comfortable to make it a Blockbuster night and I'm like "Babe, you smell nice. What are you wearing" and he replies that he used some lotion in an orange bottle that was in the bathroom.  Needless, to say the scent is nice, very light and not overpowering at all.   I wish it were  a bit thicker or creamier but it did absorb really well into my skin so it did live up to its expectations.

Overall - I am very pleased and delighted with the Creme of Nature Love Pack. I didn't expect to have such great results especially on my partially natural & relaxed hair.  Dryness during transition can be a beast and the products definitely tamed my mane something wonderful. I definitely plan to purchase the shampoo & breakage treatment in the future.  My naturally kinky textured friend has since purchased the leave-in creme and I'm sure the hubby will be using the lotion again if its within his reach.  :-)

Shoe Fetish

Have you all seen the latest photos of Shaunie O'Neal (former wife of Shaquille O'Neal) rocking some super fierce shoes at her recent Essence photo shoot.  OMG!! These shoes are to die for, they are that HOT.  Check her/them out!

{source: theybf, necolebitchie}

Shaunie looks great by the way; not sure who the designer is for these shoes not that it matters because I could not afford them but I'm very curious.  What do you think of these shoes?  HOT or NOT?

Fitness Role Model

If I could choose a celebrity to model my body after it would be Laila Ali.  Why? Because her body is ri-damn-diculous.  I mean, I could choose Mel B too (remember her from the Spice Girls) or a few others for that matter but Laila's proportions are seem very attainable I think (or hope). She still has her curves while still being toned and not overly muscular like Serena Williams.  Anyway, I think I see kickboxing in my future.

Which celeb body would be your fitness role model?

National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Today is a very important day in terms of health awareness, it is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) a nationwide initiative celebrated on March 10 every year to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls.

In support of this day, The BeautyXchange blog has been "Rocking the Red Pump" badge on its sidebar for the last few months in support of The Red Pump Project as well as to continue to raise awareness while also showing support to the many women and children affected by this disease.

The "Rock the Red Pump" initiative is part of The Red Pump Project, a campaign started by two bloggers: The Fabulous Giver and Awesomely Luvvie.  Their mission is to "do work on the ground and online to ensure that women are empowered with knowledge about HIV/AIDS and the issues surrounding it.

HIV/AIDS is obviously a very serious disease, but did you know that:

  1. Every 35 minutes, a woman tests positive for HIV in the United States

  2. Every 9 1/2 minutes someone is infected with AIDS

  3. In 2007, the rate of HIV/AIDS diagnoses for black females was nearly 20 times as high as the rate for white females

Prevention & Protection is key.

Roll Out the Red Carpet

If any of you watched the Oscars last night like I did, I'm sure you had your favorite red carpet looks.  These were some of mine:

The Queen looked regal in a satin lavendar gown from Badgley Mischka Couture.  I love the Queen, she always chooses a dress that complements her body and her makeup is always flawless - must be that CoverGirl Queen collection.

Sandra Bullock looked like a mermaid in her Marchesa gown, but that's not what did it for me.  It was her hair, which was perfectly coiffed and that red lip that made her whole look glamorous.

Jenny Lopez has come a long way from Jenny from the Block, loved this Giorgio Armani dress on her, it looked gorgeous on television.

Mariska Hargitay from Law & Order was my favorite look overall.  Her Vera Wang dress to me was HOT.  I loved loved loved this dress, the detail, the color (navy) everything.

Did you watch the red carpet/Oscars? Which celebrity look did you like?

Ingredients on Product Labels

Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on a beauty product and asked yourself WTH are they? Are they good or bad?  Recently, I was looking at the back of one of my hair conditioners, Elasta QP DPR to be exact (shown above); and I happened to see the word/ingredient, UREA.  The first thing I thought was there must be a misprint or maybe I read the ingredient list to quickly because there was no way in hell that there could be urine in my hair conditioner.  Well, suffice it to say I read the ingredient list correctly, and it did in fact read urea - imidazolidinyl urea to be exact.  So, I made a mental note to research it further.

Luckily, I didn't have to look that far because there was an interesting article online that captured my attention with this headline, Is someone peeing in your beauty products? So, you know I had to read on. The article talks about the exact ingredient listed on my hair conditioner label. To read the full article, click here.  Below is a snippet:

Have you ever read the ingredients to your favorite beauty products only to discover the word “urea” on the label?  If so, you’re probably wondering why that word sounds so familiar…then it hits you; urea sounds like urine!  As gross as it sounds the majority of your favorite products do contain urea, but before you throw them away in disgust, you should keep reading.
Urea, also known as carbamide, is an organic compound that is essentially a waste product of digested protein that gets filtered through the kidneys and is expelled from the body through urine.  However, the urea that is often found in cosmetics is made from synthetic ammonia and carbon dioxide.
Initially, urea was discovered by the French chemist Hillaire Rouelle in 1773.  Just 55 years later it became the first organic compound to be created synthetically.
So why is it used in beauty products?  Urea slows down the loss of moisture from a product; when used in skin care products it increases the water content of the top layers of the skin.  Urea also minimizes the change in the acid/base balance of a product when other ingredients are added to that product.
One important factor of urea is that it acts as a preservative; it helps to control the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms.  Without urea, our beauty products wouldn’t last nearly as long as they do once they are opened.

Do you pay attention to the ingredients in your products?  Do you research ingredients that you are unfamiliar with?

If no one responds to your call, go forward alone.
If no one talks to you, oh luckless one,
If everyone turns away from you in fear,
Reveal your thoughts and express your ideas to yourself.
If everyone leaves you while you are travelling a dangerous road,
If no one wants to look after you,
Walk on alone, on the road strewn with thorns, trampling on them with bleeding feet.
If no one shows a light, if in the dark stormy night everyone shuts their doors,
Use your rib as a torch, lit from the fire of thunder.

Product Review: Rhassoul Deep Condish Cubes

So, I finally purchased some goodies from Anita Grant.  Woohoo!  Remember this post, when I mentioned that I would be doing so.  Anyway, I could hardly wait to receive the products, I was literally checking the mailbox every day in anticipation. Here's what I ordered:

Goody Box Sampler
Whipped Butter & Organic Shea Sapote

{rhassoul cubes wrapped in plastic wrap}

Can I just tell you all how I absolutely love the Rhassoul Deep Condish Cubes!! These cubes were part of the sample box and were only about an oz each.  It's ironic that the rhassoul is my favorite product so far of this line when the impetus for my order was the Cafe Latte.  Go figure!

Product Description: Our Rhassoul Deep Condishes contains Unrefined Black Cocoa Butter & natural Soya based Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) which helps to guard scalp & hair from free radical damage. When hot liquid is added to our Rhassoul Deep Condishes, it swells & increases its surface area like a highly porous sponge.  Attracting & trapping toxins into these open porous spaces so that when it comes time to rinse the Rhassoul Deep Condish from your hair the toxins are eliminated and you're left with detoxified fluffy soft tresses.  So instead of a Hot Oil treatment why not detoxify your scalp & hair.

The instructions are to pour a hot liquid of choice onto the cubes and mix to a chocolate like consistency.  I poured hot coconut creme (my choice of hot liquid) onto the cubes and let it cool (as per the instructions). This is what it looked like afterwards.

My First Experience:
I parted my hair down the middle and applied the mixture to each side evenly. When I applied the mixture to my hair I tried not to manipulate my hair too much during the process because it is a clay .

I noticed when I applied the rhassoul to my roots (which is where my new growth is concentrated) the texture was very soft.  The rhassoul really defined the curl pattern in those sections.

In the pic above I used both cubes and about half a can of coconut creme, so there was more than enough left for a future second application.  Any left over premade mixtures should be stored in the freezer until the next usage (as per the mixtress, Anita Grant).

I let the mixture sit on my hair for about an hour (I wanted the maximum conditioning benefit that I could get!)

After rinsing the mixture out; my hair and scalp definitely felt cleansed and my tresses overall were soft and moisturized.  The most immediate observation I made was that my hair felt very strong.   A week later I also noticed less shedding during my shampoo routine.

Overall:
Anita Grant's rhassoul deep conditioning cubes will become a staple in my hair care regimen.  It's a great intense conditioning treatment that leaves your hair feeling strong, nourished, and fortified. It's like a facial for your hair! :)

Have you tried rhassoul? If you have, what were your thoughts?
