Hair's My Natural Beauty: Tamara

Welcome to another edition of Hair's My Natural Beauty - a series of informative/inspiring/insightful Natural Hair Interviews.  This week's Natural Hair beauty is a super talented makeup artist, say hello to

Name: Tamara

Location: Charlotte, NC

How would you describe your hair?
My hair is kinky, coily and coarse depending on the section of my hair. It appears to be very thick but my individual strands are very thin and breaks very easily.

How long have you been natural?
I've been natural for a little over two years. November 2008 was my BC month.

What prompted you to "go natural"?
I was tired of damaging my hair with relaxers, weaves, braids and all around ill-practices. I began searching the internet for hair advice and tips because at that point I had sworn off all hairstylists. In my search I became more exposed to natural hair and its beauty, versatility and flyness. It took me about two failed transition attempts before I finally got the nerve to do the big chop. I planned to transition for 18 months but only made it to seven months before I BC'd. I haven't looked back since.

What is the main difference between having natural hair vs chemically relaxed hair?
Versatility and for me personally over all health. I love that I can wear my hair in a fro, twist out, braid out, straight all in one week.

What hair styles are you fond of using to style your natural hair?
I'm a twist out girl. it takes me no time to twist it up and night and even less time to take them down it the morning. Bobby pins have become my best friend also, I love to just throw my hair up in a chic free-style updo from time-to-time. It keeps things fresh and exciting.

Do you accessorize your hair?  What accessories do you use?
I don't use accessories in my hair often at all. I can count on one hand the times I've put something in my hair, twice. I'm not really a flower in the hair type girl but I will do it for a festive occasion. My type of hair accessories would be to completely cover it with a hat or scarf. LOL

What hair products (shampoos, conditioners, styling aids) work best for your hair?

What is your hair regimen? How often do you wash/co-wash?
I wash once every week to week in a half. I deep condition after every shampoo. Sometimes I co-wash, sometimes I don't. I used to try and do it consistently but I am noticing that my hair really doesn't need it.

What resources, tools, books, videos, etc helped you along your natural hair journey?
Blogs and youtube has been a God send. They have helped me with my journey through inspiration, overall knowledge, reviews and tutorials. I am so grateful for those two sources.

Hair's my natural beauty because.... its unique and strong. No one on this earth has hair exactly like mine, it was designed just for me like everything else on my body. And the fact that I still have any hair on my head after years of abuse is a testimony of its strength.   {Love this statement!}
